Strange to admit, but I didn’t want to learn to read.

Immediately after learning, when I was seven and in first grade, I read all of Edgar Allan Poe. What a difference from my boring, babyish schoolbooks! Poe awakened my love of language with his words of fire.

I wrote my first story in first grade. The teacher rejected it because it was a day late… which prepared me for the writer’s life.

But after I wrote the story, I realized that I could read it. Stories came from somewhere! And I could make them.

Over time, my short stories, poetry and articles appeared in Daily Science Fiction, Asimov’s, Interzone, Ellery Queen, The Baltimore Sun, The Washington Times, The Lyric, Woman’s Day and Seventeen, among others. A play was produced in the Baltimore Playwrights’ Festival.

I’ve written ad copy and edited art instruction books for Grumbacher, taught writing at the University of Baltimore, co-founded and run a literary quarterly and worked as a reader/fiction editor for a literary agent.

In 2003 and 2004, I provided copy editing of a 400-page novel for Brenda Novak’s Annual Auction for the Cure of Diabetes.

Now I’m senior copy editor on a medical journal. If there’s a job connected with writing, seems like I’ve done it.

None of my novels have been published, though. Not yet. I’ll get there.

Before moving to Texas, I lived in San Jose. Before that: Baltimore. Before that: New York.

By now, I must’ve used up four or five lives. I think I’ll stay here a while and concentrate on my stories.
